Search Engine Optimization Requires Sound Navigation
The navigation structure of your site is important because it is through your navigation that the search engine spiders are able to access all of your web site's content. It is always helpful to have a link to every page of your web site on every other page of your web site through the use of a standard navigation menu - however it is not necessary. Often times it simply makes no sense in terms of usability to put a link to every page on every page, especially if your site contains topic-specific sub-navigational menus (sounds complicated, but basically if you sell 30 different kinds of dog collars for Fido, and you also sell leashes, food, treats, toys, and training books, you're probably not going to link to the leather dog collars page and the nylon dog collars page from the food page - but rather from the dog collars page itself.
